4. Caring for Goldfish

Similar to Koi Fish, Goldfish are long-term residents of your pond. They can live between 10 to 15 years. Much smaller than Koi, you can raise more Gold Fish in your water feature than Koi. 6. Pond Size

In the case of a pond, size does matter. The bigger the pond, the more you can love. The bigger the pond, the more it’s going to cost you as well. Good thing a residential pond is completely customizable. It is a factor in design, fish population, pump and filter sizes and so much more. What we love about pond size is that there isn’t a right or wrong size. There is a size that works well for your needs.

7. Emergent Plants

Plants are as important to a pond as fish. They give a pond its final look. Plants interact with water and wildlife in a way that creates a balanced ecosystem. We love our emergent plants. These are the plants that grow out of the water and wave in the wind. Some examples are elephant ears, cattails, and papyrus. We love the dimension emergent plants add to ponds.

The thing about liners is, you have to have one to build your pond. We love a thick, 45 mil rubber liner that is sold by the linear foot. A custom pond is a great option for creating your unique yard oasis. A rigid, preformed-plastic liner doesn’t allow for the freedom of creativity or size. For a pond that will last the test the time, the thicker the liner, the better.

20. Pumps

We love water movement. In order for the water to keep moving, you need a proper pump. Based on the design, you’ll need a submersible or non-submersible pump sized for the volume of water it will be moving. If all of this seems like a lot to figure out on your own, don’t worry. 21. Filters

The best possible filter is an Ultra Violet Clarifier. We don’t love green water. That green water is really single-celled algae that have taken over your ecosystem. Pumped through the UV Clarifier, the algae are killed. The by-product of the dead algae clumps together and falls to the bottom of the pond. We love that the water stays clear. Remember, talk to an expert to size your pump and filter properly.

22. Fountains

There is such a romantic quality to fountains. Stand-alone or jutting out of a pond, fountains give our water spaces the sounds we love and the movement we need. Moving water creates aeration. Aeration keeps the mosquitos at bay and adds the oxygen plants and fish need to stay healthy. We love a dramatic pluming fountain and interesting spitters.
